In times of great uncertainty, it’s common for alternative and esoteric practices to start growing in popularity.
The reason seems to be that when the world becomes more intimidating and confusing, we turn back to an idealised past. When what the present world offers seems shallow and unfulfilling, spiritual practices provide something more reflective, a kind of mindfulness for the soul. These practices, routed in ancient ideas and traditions, can seem more authentic. They hold a kind of timeless truth to them, whether it’s an affinity to nature or a sense of enlightenment. They offer us comfort and a new sense of purpose.
We tend to overlook the fact that many of these ideas were developed in more brutal times. When we didn’t understand basic science and physics; when we were definitely not all equal; when we were poorer, and died younger. When following different beliefs, could cost you your life.
What we really seek is an easy fix. Some great big simple solution to a range of complex problems. It never works. Some ideas were left behind for the right reasons. And should remain so.
