We’ve talked before on the podcast about how many classic ghost stories focus on injustice. An act of crime or cruelty results in someone’s ruin and death, whose anguished spirit later returns to enact a terrible revenge.

And to some extent, that dampens the horror. Readers can’t look away as the tale unfolds, and when the horror strikes, it’s tempered by the fact that it’s happening to someone who deserves it. We still get to feel safe because it’s happening to the guilty; it couldn’t possibly happen to someone like us.

Judgment is passed and it’s passed on the right people. How unlike real life, where increasingly we are learning about the injustices of the justice system. How the wrong people are sentenced for crimes they didn’t commit. Where blind justice still manages to punish certain ethic or social groups disproportionately for their offenses, when compared to other groups. And where miscarriages of justice, once discovered, are met with institutional denial and obstruction.

The classic horror trope is that you can never escape your sins. You can’t escape punishment for the crimes that you commit. But true horror, is perhaps to face punishment for the crimes that you didn’t.

Hear witness accounts of the supernatural. Author David Paul Nixon has spent almost a decade travelling Great Britain and collecting lost ghost stories that have never been told before. Are these stories of madness, lies, or self-deception? Or could they be the real thing? The only way to find out, is to listen.
