One of the many questions this episode raises is whether ghosts (assuming they exist at all) are conscious or not. Are they, as in Stone Tape theory, a kind of recording of events that replays over and over again. Or are they something more?

Do they know we’re there? Can they see us, and hear us? And if so, how much can they see and hear? Are they always there, watching us, even when we can’t even see them? If not, where do they go when we can’t see them?

Most of the New Ghost Stories cases take place over a relatively short period. It’s not often we’re asked to consider what the consequences of living with an apparition over the long term are. At a certain point, the bumps in the night and the shadows must inevitably start to lose their novelty, and become more normalised. What happens then? What’s it actually like to have to live with an apparition? How do you learn to cope with it?

How do you maintain your relationship to reality? When I listen to other podcasts, like The Battersea Poltergeist or the Witch Farm, I get the sense there’s a kind of snowball effect going on. Something unexplained occurs, something strange is seen, and then suddenly everything becomes attached to the supernatural. Things which have a more simple, rational explanation, suddenly take on the context of being part of a larger supernatural event. It becomes hard to know what’s normal and what isn’t.

The hunt for the truth is never easy. It’s even harder when the people involved are stretched to breaking point. When even the regular pressures, everyday stresses, take on a new weight. And everything coalesces into what seems like one powerful inexplicable force. One that’s focused on your undoing.
